Hearing aid types

Technical development has essentially produced two basic types of hearing systems: Behind the Ear (BTE) and In the Ear (ITE). With BTE systems in particular, there are a variety of ways to deliver amplified sound from the hearing instrument to the ear. Based on your specific needs, your diagnosed hearing loss and your individual budget, our hearing care professionals will find the right solution for you. There are different types of hearing instruments that are designed to meet the individual needs and preferences of the user. Here are some of the main types of hearing instruments:

  1. Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing instruments: This type of hearing aid is the most common and consists of a housing that is worn behind the ear and a sound tube that directs sound into the ear. BTE hearing instruments are usually more powerful than ITE hearing instruments and are suitable for people with moderate to severe hearing loss.
  2. In-the-ear (ITE) hearing instruments: This type of hearing instrument is worn directly in the ear and is usually smaller and more discreet than BTE hearing instruments. ITE hearing instruments are usually less powerful than BTE hearing instruments and are best suited for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.
  3. Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) hearing instruments: This type of hearing instrument is a combination of BTE and ITE hearing instruments and consists of a housing worn behind the ear and a speaker placed in the ear canal. RIC hearing systems provide good hearing performance for almost any form of hearing loss.
